On this day in Disney history, the legendary John Lennon signed the contract officially dissolving The Beatles from inside his room at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. John, along with his son Julian and companion May Pang, were spending the Christmas holiday in Florida.
The band had actually broken up in 1970, but it took 4 years for the legal paperwork to be drawn up to divide their massive earnings and for each member to sign. John was the last to sign which, to me, was fitting since he was the one to form the group in the beginning. The documents were delivered to his room at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort already bearing the signatures of all 3 other Beatles.
In May Pang’s book, Instamatic Karma: Photographs of John Lennon, she wrote “He finally picked up his pen and, in the unlikely backdrop of the Polynesian Village Hotel at Disney World, ended the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in history by simply scrawling John Lennon at the bottom of the page.”
From the information I have read, the room in which John Lennon stayed was in the Hawaii Longhouse. The building called the Hawaii Longhouse in 1974 is now the Samoa Longhouse. I have to wonder if I have stayed in that room without even knowing it!
